They're uniquely Analord, but very much Aphex Twin. They stand out and fit someone between, yet far away from, the drum n bass and ambient work he's done. You have songs like Phonatacid, Pissed Up In Se1, and Home Made Polysynth that are so intensely calming and funky.

Review: Classic Aphex Twin 4 tracker formerly on Rephlex and licensed to TVT/Waxtrax. This EP is a must have for all Aphex fans and all aficionados of superior electronic music. 'Analogue Bubblebath' is the ultimate chillout tune, with programmed 808 breakbeat, haunting melodies and incredibly warm & round analogue synths present throughout. 'Isoprophlex' works a nasty distorted kick & aggressive analogue spurts with haunting background pads. On the flip, we have 'Entrance to Exit', a frenetic breakbeat pounder with dark sensibilities and 'AFX 2', a journey into abstract breaks and keys. Finally re-pressed after being out of print for 3 years. Review: The second Aphex re-release this week, and a second time to pick up on a genuine moment of electronic history.
Originally released in 1996, his fifth album in as many years meant business from the very moment the wild and whimsical opener '4' scribbled it way through the speakers. With jaunty jams such as 'Cornish Acid' and 'Fingerbib' running amok mid-set, Richard D James Album acted as a fine mission statement to expect the unexpected and never anticipate formula or form. And it still carries that very same message today. Review: Just four months after the release of the long-awaited Syro, Richard D. James has dropped an EP of all-new material, more than making up for his 13 years of radio silence. Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments Pt 2 is an album comprised of music that's just that, making for one of the most unique collection of Aphex Twin tracks of James's entire career.
From intricate piano miniatures to almost jazz-inspired drum rhythms, it's essential listening for those willing to delve deep into the strange sonic world of the producer. Review: Seminal album alert. If this isn't already in your collection, now's the time to get it. Recognised as one of Aphex Twin's most accomplished long players, I Care Because You Do is a comprehensive exploration into the future of electronic music that was penned 17 years ago but doesn't sound dated in any way. Featuring smooth segues from expansive dreamy soundscapes ('The Waxen Pith') to icy breakbeat workouts ('Wax The Nip') at points this is the warmest, cosiest friend you'll ever have. At others it's the most uncompromising foe you'll ever meet. Essential for music lovers.
Review: It's rare that an electronic album is the biggest album of the year, or at least the most hyped. That's certainly the case with Syro, Richard D James first official release under his Aphex Twin moniker for some 13 years. So, is it in any good? For starters, it sounds like an Aphex Twin album. Listen through to the 12 tracks, and many of his familiar staples are present - the 'Digeridoo' era rave breakbeats, the mangled synth-funk mash-ups, the intoxicating ambient-era melodies, the warped basslines and the skittish drill & bass style rhythms. There's madness, beauty and intensity in spades. In other words, it's an Aphex Twin album, and - as so many have pointed out since the album's release was announced - there's no-one else quite like Richard D James.
Review: Some 25 years after delivering his debut 12', Richard D James hasn't lost the ability to thrill or inspire. By his obtuse standards, the material that makes up the surprise Cheetah EP is actually rather laidback and melodious. 'Cheetah2 (LD Spectrum)', for example, sounds like a slow house jam written by robots, while the even deeper 'Cheetah7B' shuffles along in a metronomic fashion, seemingly oblivious to the increasingly aggressive World at large. Of course, those trademark skittish IDM rhythms are present - see the B-side's lead cut - and the Cornishman has thrown in a couple of hazy ambient cuts for good measure. Review: There's not much to say about a reissue of such an essential album. Lovingly repressed on heavyweight vinyl, this is a rare chance to own one of Aphex's finest moments in the golden format. After the fluffiness of Selected Ambient Works Vol 1, this album makes a polar opposite in its sheer drama.
From achingly sweet melodic moments to utterly terrifying drones, scrapes and clangs, this triple-vinyl epic is a pinnacle of sound design with soul. If you're not already familiar with it, waste no time in delving into the somnambulant wonders this album holds. Review: Are there two more consistently - and rightfully - fawned over names in electronic music than John Peel and Aphex Twin? A coming together of two giants is always going to be worth hearing and so this second Peel Session recording proves. One of only two radio broadcasts Richard D.
James recorded as part of a special set of radio themed vinyl releases from Warp, it's hypnagogic electronic pop meets ambient techno on this instalment with the trademark timbre and tonality of James lighting up each and every track in ways that are somehow both heavenly yet of high physical impact. Review: In line with the timely reappraisal of all things R&S related, the resurgent Apollo have seen the opportunity to bring one of their most celebrated records back for another round.
Aphex Twin's ambient recordings mature magnificently with age, sounding ever richer and more emotive as the rest of electronic music continues to play catch up all around. From the gentle breakbeats of 'Xtal' to the aquatic techno lure of 'Tha', the airy rave of 'Pulsewidth' to the heartwrenching composition of 'Ageispolis', every track is a perennial example of how far ambient techno could reach even back then. It's just that no-one quite had the arm-span of Richard D. Review: Aphex Twin is either having a breakdown, or simply making up for lost time. Since dropping his first album in a decade, Syro, he's become strangely prolific, giving away vast amounts of music on Soundcloud and dropping EPs left, right and centre.
This latest offering serves up the predictably hard to pronounce 'Machromt30a Edit 2b 96', a blissfully melodious, Selected Ambient Works style slice of electronic beauty that was originally only available on the Japanese version of Syro. It's backed with two similarly impressive bonus cuts; the deliciously rolling, melodious 'XmasEvet1N' (a brilliant alternate take of an album highlight) and 'Machromt38 Fast', a skittish, Reflex-esque IDM reworking of the EP's title track. Review: Back in 1996, Richard D. James and Planet Mu boss Mike Paradinas collaborated on a bizarre self-titled album under the name Mike & Rich. A cult addition to their respective highly-regarded canons that saw the pair applying their braindance template to easy listening and funk, the album soon came to be known as Expert Knob Twiddlers thanks to the excellent cover art. Newly reissued on Planet Mu, the album has been 'carefully cleaned up, re-edited and remastered from the original DAT tape and put into a more fitting order.' Some twenty years on the album remains a playful listen made all the more compelling by the addition of seven previously unheard tracks.
A must for any fans of Aphex Twin and u-ZIQ.
